Epic Journey Ends … New One Begins

Thursday, 9 January 2014

I've always been a believer in the 4 D's to accomplish a goal. Dream, Desire, Dedication, and Discipline. The Desire, Dedication, and the Discipline are what support the Dream and make it come true. Without one or more of these foundations, you can't accomplish the end goal, the Dream.

It is with a sad heart and tears in my eyes, that today I am announcing that I am retiring from Olympic sailing.

Hello Race Fans

It has been a few weeks since you have heard from us. Since our return from France (49er FX World Championship), Anna and I have been keeping ourselves fairly busy at home.

Home And Enjoying The Festivities

November 1, 2013
Pittsburgh, PA

Life has been semi calm since the last blog. I've been able to spend some weeks at home helping coach at the new CrossFit box here in Mt. Lebanon (CrossFit Mt Lebanon). The days are long and busy, but it's always fun helping someone accomplish a goal, whether big or small.

2nd In Act 7, ESS, Nice FRA

October 7, 2013
Nice, France

Apologies for the delayed blog, but it was a busy evening after some exciting racing yesterday when we came back to finish 2nd overall in an intense last three races of the Extreme Sailing Series Act 7 in Nice, France. After starting the day quite badly, we rallied in the end to get two race wins before the final double points race where it came down to a who beat whom race between us and Team Red Bull for the second spot on the podium.

Very Different Conditions Today

October 5, 2013
Nice, France

It was a much slower paced day for everyone today at the Extreme Sailing Series Act 7 in Nice. After the storms rolled through last night, we sailed out in lighter winds but ominous looking clouds. The clouds stayed ashore thankfully, and did us a favour by keeping the wind on the course by sucking it in. We fired off eight races as the breeze got lighter and lighter and trickier and trickier. Unfortunately for us, our day started off great with a 3,2,2,4,4. But then it ended up going not so great and we finished the day with a 8,3,8. We are still in second overall, but after the great start and early climb up the leaderboard closer to The Wave, Muscat (the overall leaders), we fell off pace a little and lost all the valuable points and more.

Another Wild Day On The Water In Nice

October 4, 2013
Nice, France

Another epic day of sailing was had at the Extreme Sailing Series in Nice today aboard the Extreme 40's. We, on Team Alinghi, had an OK day and held onto our 2nd place overall on the leaderboard with four of the six races being top three finishes. Unfortunately, Team The Wave, Muscat, had a slightly better day than us and extended their lead a little more on us, with Team Red Bull sitting in third behind us.

Wet, Wild And Windy For ESS Act 7, Nice FRA

October 3, 2013
Nice, France

A wet, wild, and windy day of sailing was had today by everyone at Act 7 of the Extreme Sailing Series here in Nice! I'm again sailing with Team Alinghi and overall we had a pretty good start to the regatta, finishing today in second overall. The wind was around 20kts and gusting higher for the first five or so races before it died a little to the high teens for the final couple.

11th Overall At 2013 49erFX World Championships

September 29, 2013
Marseille, France

We had a solid race today but it wasn't quite enough for us to move up to the Finals, so we ended 11th overall at the 2013 49erFX World Championships. We are happy and sad with this result. Our goal was top 10, but we have made an improvement in the fleet against our last results at Europeans (14th).

Today Swimming; Tomorrow Petit-Finals

September 28, 2013
Marseille, France

An up and down day again for us at the 2013 49erFX World Championships. We started with a great race and ended the day taking a dip mid race (capsizing). That said, we finished the day with a 4, 15, 10, 16 and are sitting 12th overall. We just missed the automatic cut for the Finals, so tomorrow we will race in two short races in the Petit Finals and attempt to move up to 10th to advance into the Finals.

Bit More Breeze Today

September 27, 2013
Marseille, France

We finally had good wind to the point of being able to stretch our legs out today at the 2013 49erFX World Championships. After a short delay for the wind to fill, the Gold fleet headed out and completed 4 races. We had a decent day, but we are not super psyched about the scores on the water. We finished with a 16, 11,7, 11 and we are sitting 10th overall going into tomorrow's races.
